Filters
Metal mesh filters go in the tank and come back properly degreased. Paper and charcoal filters cannot be cleaned and need replacing. We will tell you the size and let you buy your own rather than mark one up.
The canopy
Stainless canopies are degreased and finished with the grain. Painted and glass canopies are done by hand.
Water here is hard at around 275 mg/l, so limescale sits on the hob surround, the kettle and the glass, and it has to be tackled separately from the grease when a range or oven door is stripped.
Usually booked with an oven clean or the hob.
Questions we get asked
My extractor hardly pulls any air. Will cleaning fix that?
If the metal mesh filters are clogged with grease, yes, and you notice the difference the same day. If it is a recirculating hood with a charcoal filter that has never been changed, cleaning will not fix it and a new filter will. We tell you which on the day. The hood is £28, metal filters included.
Can you supply the charcoal filter?
We do not carry them. There are dozens of sizes and marking one up to you would be daft. What we will do is read the model number off the hood, tell you exactly which filter it takes, and leave you to order it online for a few pounds. Fitting one takes about a minute when it turns up.
Will the stainless steel get scratched?
Not by us. Stainless is degreased then finished along the grain, never across it, and nothing abrasive goes near a painted or glass canopy. Swirl marks left by somebody else’s scouring pad will still be there when we finish, because those are in the metal. We point them out before we start rather than after.
Do you clean the ducting too?
Only the parts that come apart without tools: the filters, the canopy inside and out, and the fan housing where we can reach it. Ductwork running inside a wall or a ceiling void is a specialist job with different equipment. In a domestic kitchen it very rarely needs doing, and we will say so if yours does.
